It already appears 2024 will be a very active hurricane season. It’s still not to late to secure your property, make needed repairs, take photos of personal property and pre-loss property conditions. If you do experience a loss here’s 3 things you can do to make your insurance claim, go smoother.
1. Report your claim to your insurer in a timely manner.
2. Document all damage and all conversations with your insurer. Don’t count on an overworked insurer’s adjuster to see all the damage. If you feel overwhelmed by the process or have other life priorities a public adjuster can act as you advocate with the insurance company.
3. Don’t be in a hurry to fix damaged property. If you fix it too early, how are you going to prove the damage to your insurance carrier? Your responsibility under the insurance policy is to mitigate or prevent any further losses. Instead, get multiple quotes from reputable contractors, don’t be pressured and make sure you notify and get approval (in writing) to make repairs from your insurer. This will help avoid many common disputes.
