On January 19, 2004 a steam pipe within the heating system of the Braverman residence broke due to the extremely cold winter weather in East Hampton, New York. The residents of the home were out of town when the loss occurred and it was not discovered until approximately one week after the pipe burst. The Braverman residence is over 5000 square feet and is located within the very affluent East Hampton Village, located south of the highway. The damage to the home was extensive and consisted of steam damage to all of the finishes throughout the home. Upon notification of the loss the carrier sent their contractor to assess the damage. The contractor determined that the damage was $169,692.84, at which time the carrier insisted on settling the claim for this amount of their estimate. Tutwiler and Associates, Inc. compiled figures on this loss which were submitted to the carrier. After several rounds of negotiation and appraisal of the disputed difference the claim was settled for $756,868.59.
