Five Reasons to Hire a Public Adjuster for Your Hurricane Harvey Property Insurance Claim

With widespread property damage expected from Hurricane Harvey, many property owners will be seeking out assistance and advice for their property insurance damage claim. One of the most common questions we receive as these calls come into the office revolves around the benefits of hiring a public insurance adjuster. It still amazes us that so many policyholders have not heard of our profession or understand what public adjusters do. So while we try to educate and not blow our own horn, I’ll try to answer that question in hopes of giving readers a basic understanding of the benefits of hiring public adjusters and the role they play in the insurance claims process.

Big Money Losses and the 50% Rule. Law & Ordinance Explained

Almost two months into the 2017 hurricane season, most of the pundits have upgraded the likely number of tropical storms we can expect in the Atlantic basin this year. Of course, these experts can never tell us when and where the storms will impact a particular geographic area, but what we all can do is prepare as best we can based on the location of the property at risk. Just as the mantra for successful real estate investment is location, location, location the same applies in a disaster recovery plan. Know your location, the risk you are exposed to and understand the exposure you are facing.

Reviewing the Insurance Policy for Sarasota, Florida Policyholder Results in a Favorable Claim Settlement

Reviewing the Insurance Policy for Sarasota, Florida Policyholder Results in a Favorable Claim Settlement

Some months back I received a call from a physician who was referred to me by an engineering firm we had worked with on a large project in Longboat Key, Florida that resulted in a multi-million dollar settlement. Not only was the client pleased with our work, but their engineer apparently was equally impressed given the kind words he shared with this physician about our work and the results we were able to achieve with previous claim. During my initial discussion with the physician on the phone, I told him it was unlikely we could prevail on his insurance claim based on the damages he described to me. The insurance industry had changed most policies to take away coverage that was previously available for what sounded to me like a collapse claim.

Policyholder Question – Submitting Your Own Insurance Claim Repair Estimate

The following is an insurance claim question we answered for a policyholder through the United Policyholders Ask an Expert Forum.

Q. Can I have a repair estimate reviewed and a new estimate prepared based on the estimate sent by my insurance adjusters estimate? They have issued a check in the amount of this estimate, less the deductible. What should I do with the check?

A. Good question, I am sure many in your position have questions about the estimate prepared and submitted by their insurance adjuster. Please remember, this work product is just an "estimate." While the adjuster may have some actual contracting experience,......read more

Florida Condominium Owner Insurance Claims and the Nightmare Claim Process that Often Follows

Florida Condominium Owner Insurance Claims and the Nightmare Claim Process that Often Follows
Not surprising are the calls we get from property owners living in condos, who are looking for help following property damage to their building that affected their unit. This often takes the form of damage to the unit owner’s property which often includes their personal property, i.e., contents, as well as items such as carpet, other types of floor covering, trim items such as door frames, baseboards, cabinets, and the list goes on depending on the type and severity of the damage and the wording in their condominium documents. When a covered casualty event occurs, whether it is water, fire, the dreaded “mold” word or some other peril, the finger pointing starts and in many cases, the unit owner is caught in the middle.

Is Boat Dock Damage a Covered Insurance Claim from Hurricane Matthew?

We are getting a number of inquiries from policyholders following the passing of Hurricanes Hermine and Hurricane Matthew about damages to docks, piers, and other manmade structures built over or close to the water.  As both of this year’s hurricanes remained offshore for most of their passing, the tropical storm forced winds nonetheless caused quite a bit of damage to coastal area structures, which included damage from wind, water and in some cases, collapse land subsidence which were holding up seawalls and bulkheads.

Ever Wonder What Happened to Your Hurricane Matthew Insurance Claim When the Adjuster Left?

Ever Wonder What Happened to Your Hurricane Matthew Insurance Claim When the Adjuster Left?

Many people might be surprised that having an adjuster look at your claim is only the beginning of the insurance claim process. Remember, the field adjuster that inspected your property may not be an employee of the insurance company. They are typically independent adjusters on contract and typically are paid a set fee or percentage for each claim they handle. This is especially true during disaster situations when there are so many claims to adjust.
