Debby Aftermath: Public Adjusters Hear Alarming Reports, Critical Needs, and Insurance Coverage Concerns

As a follow-up to our insurance claim tips blog post yesterday, some of the calls and reports we are receiving in the aftermath of Hurricane Debby are quite alarming.

Residents of the Lakewood Ranch community are reporting extensive flood damage to homes and cars, along with critical care needs due to heart attacks, electrocutions, and other emergencies that have tragically resulted in loss of life. Property owners are stuck in their homes, waiting for the waters to recede, and many are concerned about their coverage since these inland communities, which haven't experienced flooding in over 30 years, are not near the coast. While automobiles will likely be covered, expensive damages to homes may result in numerous liability claims against developers and possibly municipalities. This is an ongoing critical situation, and we are working to assist those calling in need of help.

In greater Sarasota County, Florida, there have also been reports of yachts catching fire. This situation is ongoing as crews work to mitigate further damage to other boats and the environment.

As we mentioned yesterday, embedded tornadoes and significant wind gusts always pose a risk, causing roof and interior water damage that may initially appear as roof leaks. Many people are experiencing similar issues, and we expect more calls in the coming days.

Additionally, we continue to see negative messaging being publicized by government and state leaders towards licensed contractors and public adjusters. Public servants are advising people, “Remember - don't sign ANYTHING until you talk to your insurance company or your insurance agent. Fraudsters are out there!” While our firm is empathetic to those under duress and respectful of the ongoing recovery efforts by first responders, this degrading and generalized messaging is unhelpful to policyholders seeking to comply with and mitigate their losses as required by their insurance policies. We've seen property owners unable to reach their insurance representatives and emergency service professionals moving on to help the next customer in need. This messaging is counterproductive and hinders recovery efforts, causing more harm to consumers trying to avoid living in homes that will eventually become toxic mold residences. Licensed professionals are a recovery resource that can be harnessed in a positive manner.

Food for thought for any leader out there: keeping ethical decision-making at the forefront of your daily service is crucial to protecting those impacted by Debby. Policyholders First!

We will report more soon.
