Hurricane Dorian and The Bahamas – The Time for Giving is Now

The unimaginable destruction of property and loss of life on Grand Bahama Island and the Marsh Harbor community is heart- wrenching to say the least. I have seen a lot of the destruction and the human misery that follows in the aftermath of hurricanes and other disasters in my 45-year career as an insurance professional and public adjuster, but the videos and now live reporting coming out of the Bahamas is simply unprecedented.

Bahama Relief Efforts Underway – Donations Needed

Bahama Relief Efforts Underway – Donations Needed

As reports and video of the Hurricane Dorian devastation come in, the devastation and human tragedy is mind numbing. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those in the Bahamas and with those who will be part of the relief efforts. We expect the impacted areas to be unsafe for Public Adjusters and other professionals for some time. For those who are so inclined, I wanted to share a very good Hurricane Dorian Donation article from NPR on reputable organizations that will be at the forefront of the relief effort and also a list of supplies needed. In the meantime, we will do what we can to answer policyholder insurance claim questions regarding Hurricane Dorian damage and steps they should be taking. I challenge everyone, especially those in the insurance claims industry to find a way to donate to the Bahama’s relief effort.

Winter Has Arrived – Deep Freeze and Broken Pipe Bursts Will Reach into the Deep South

A historic deep freeze is gripping the US with sub-zero temperatures and even more serious wind chill factors. With it will come unprecedented frozen pipe bursts, iced dams and roof collapses that will cause extensive property damage and loss to personal property or business inventory.  As for homeowners, if you discover a leak, turn your water off, call in a reputable plumber, inform your insurance company of the damage and get their agreement to fix and pay for the damage before hiring a reputable clean-up company.

How Policyholders Can Benefit from Hiring a Public Adjuster for Their Hurricane Florence Property Insurance Claim

How Policyholders Can Benefit from Hiring a Public Adjuster for Their Hurricane Florence Property Insurance Claim

Based on the volume of phone calls coming into our offices, North and South Carolina business and homeowners are quickly turning their attention to recovering from Hurricane Florence. With widespread flooding and property damage, property owners unfamiliar with the process will be filing an insurance claim for the first time and possibly seeking assistance and advice for their property insurance damage claim. One of the most common questions we receive when calls come into our offices revolves around the benefits of hiring a public insurance adjuster. It still amazes us that so many policyholders have not heard of our profession or understand what public adjusters do. So, in an attempt to educate and not blow our own horn, I’ll try to answer that question in hopes of giving readers a basic understanding of what public adjusters do and the critical role they can play in the insurance claims process.

Public Adjuster Interview – Preparing Your Hurricane Florence Insurance Claim

Public Adjuster Interview – Preparing Your Hurricane Florence Insurance Claim

I was happy to contribute to this interview regarding Hurricane Florence insurance claims. We already have an adjuster team in North Carolina and have opened an office in Wilmington, NC. We already know many home and business owners are dealing with serious losses and will need to file a property or flood claim.  Some are telling us they may not see an adjuster for weeks! There are a number of steps property owners need to take in the immediate aftermath of a storm to avoid insurance claim settlement problems. Many mistakes related to filing insurance claims occur immediately following the storm. And there are also some safety issues that need to be considered before folks start mitigating their loss. It’s also important for the policyholder to understand their insurance policy responsibilities and properly document their claim.

Claim Adjuster Shortage and Inexperienced Insurance Adjusters Will Create Claim Bottlenecks for Hurricane Florence Policyholders

Claim Adjuster Shortage and Inexperienced Insurance Adjusters Will Create Claim Bottlenecks for Hurricane Florence Policyholders

Due to the widespread, wind, flood and water damage caused by Hurricane Florence, there is likely to be a shortage of insurance adjusters to handle the volume of claims that will be reported to both the government (FEMA) and the private sector insurance carriers. For those of us in the business, we see it after every major storm. The rush to get damages assessed, by insurance company adjusters and the many inexperienced contractors eyeballing damages, will create impediments to solving policyholder claims.

Will You Be Covered for Your Hurricane Florence Flooding?

Insurance payments to North and South Carolina policyholders with flood damage will depend on the policies they purchased, the language in each policy and the law of each state. Nothing is simple in property insurance adjusting. Hurricane Florence may be a textbook example of some of the issues that may have to be sorted out before there is a discussion about the actual adjustment and payment of a hurricane claim.
